Multiscale investigation of stress-corrosion crack propagation mechanisms in oxide glasses

چکیده
Fracture propagation involves the coupling of many length scales ranging from the sample loading geometry to the molecular level. In brittle materials, the length scales of the damage process zone are reduced to a submicrometric scale and the coupling with the macroscopic scale is expected to be the domain of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). However, although 2D elastic analyses are generally adequate to describe the sample deformation at macroscopic scales, local investigations of failure mechanisms at the sample free surface require the use of 3D mechanical tools due to the crack front local curvature and to the corner point singularities at the intersection between the crack front and the external surfaces of the sample. We present here a thorough multiscale investigation of

Formation and Evolution of a Confined Liquid Condensate at the Crack Tip in Glasses
Crack propagation in oxide glasses at low crack velocities is controlled by stress corrosion. Proper knowledge of the crack tip chemical environment is thus crucial to understand the slow fracture process of these materials. The formation of a liquid condensate in the confined area of the crack tip is theoretically expected and is classically mentioned to explain specific behavior during the cr...
متن کاملStress-corrosion mechanisms in silicate glasses
The present review is intended to revisit the advances and debates in the comprehension of the mechanisms of subcritical crack propagation in silicate glasses almost a century after its initial developments. Glass has inspired the initial insights of Griffith into the origin of brittleness and the ensuing development of modern fracture mechanics. Yet, through the decades the real nature of the ...
متن کاملStress-corrosion crack growth of Si-Na-K-Mg-Ca-P-O bioactive glasses in simulated human physiological environment.
This paper describes research on the stress-corrosion crack growth (SCCG) behavior of a new series of bioactive glasses designed to fabricate coatings on Ti and Co-Cr-based implant alloys. These glasses should provide improved implant fixation between implant and exhibit good mechanical stability in vivo. It is then important to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that control environmen...
متن کاملProbability Approach for Prediction of Pitting Corrosion Fatigue Life of Custom 450 Steel
In this study, the pitting type of corrosion growth characteristics, fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior; axial fatigue tests were carried out on precipitation hardened martensitic Custom 450 steel in the air and 3.5wt% NaCl solution. Using the ratio of the depth to the half-width of the pits; (a/c)= 1.5±0.2 the corrosion pit depth growth law was obtained as a function of stress a...
متن کاملAn Outrun Competition of Corrosion Fatigue and Stress Corrosion Cracking on Crack Initiation in a Compressor Blade
First row rotating blades of four axial-flow compressors were prematurely fractured. Previous investigations showed that the site atmosphere contains corrosive compounds which lead to an increase in possibility of pitting on the blades. It was also revealed that the crack was originated from two corrosion pits. Thus, this work is conducted to ascertain which of fatigue or stress corrosion crack...
